Hi everyone! Today I'm going to talk about common harmful ingredients found in makeup products.
Carbon Black: This is a powder that is used as a pigment to make certain cosmetics black. The products it can be used in include eyeliner, lipstick and mascara. This product is made from an incomplete combustion of a material that contains carbon. It is extremely harmful and can cause cancer, lung disease and cardiovascular disease.
Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT): These are both preservatives that are found in many cosmetic products such as eyeshadow, lip products and hair care products. They are usually labelled BHA or BHT on the product's labels. This can also cause cancer and it can effect the reproductive system's development. People who are the most vulnerable to this preservative are infants and pregnant women.
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS): This toxin is found in some body wash, shampoo, face wash, foundation, toothpaste and mouthwash. Sodium lauryl sulfate can cause many harmful effects to the skin such as irritation, disrupting the skins oil balance, cystic acne and sores.
There are many more chemicals that are in our cosmetics and are very harmful to not only us but the people who produce them. If the cosmetic brand uses cheap labour to make their products and the workers are handling raw dangerous preservatives and pigments with little protection they can be more harmed than the consumer of the product.
